The new 'work culture'
Since the time I have started working, I have heard many of my bosses and senior managers highlighting the term ‘work culture’. Initially I
used to seriously consider and respect this so-called culture, however, with time
and experience I have started mocking it. The reason is that it was just an
invisible concept used to sound a bit sophisticated.
So what exactly is
work culture? During the interview rounds, candidates are informed about the so
called work culture and ethics which the company has that is different from
everyone else. It is only once an employee starts working they get to know the
reality of it. All this work culture or company rules are only on paper and
they keep changing as per the conditions.
A work culture is something which emphasises
uniformity and helps the higher authority remain unbiased towards their employees.
But these days what we see as work culture especially in the private firms, is a
one-sided authoritarian approach. In many cases where I have worked, I have
seen this work culture to be quite partial, leaving the workers feeling
dissatisfied. The ‘HR rules’ which have to be equal for all, are also quite
different for employees working at different levels. Keeping a track record of your performance is
no longer considered for promotion. What is getting prioritised is the track of
how much of information is being given about what’s going on in the office,
back bitching and who is talking what about the seniors. Being punctual is no
longer a quality rather staying longer at work place and working till late or
carrying your work back home is a quality which is admired. What matters is
not how early you reach office but how much longer you stay back there in the office which proves
your efficiency.
No wonder why I
see so many people either resigning, changing their jobs frequently or opting to have their own start-up citing
the main reason as this unfair work culture. I would not generalise this term,
but only from the 18 years of work experience I have had, most of the firms
have the same kind of culture which was more about office politics and insensitive
approach towards employees. There are a lot of people working towards the overall
success of a firm but they are never appreciated like the office boys or the
cleaners and sweepers who also need to be given some basic respect.
The employees are
the back bone of any company and it is their contribution which decides the
fate of the firm. A good and unprejudiced work culture plays a pivotal role and
leaves a very positive impact on the people who really want to work for
companies in future. Even a start-up needs people to work for them, therefore,
laying good policies for them will help in a better, relaxed and enjoyable work
culture for everyone to grow.
I HOPE THIS MAKES SOME PEOPLE THINK ABOUT WHAT WORK CULTURE THEY HAVE OR WANT TO HAVE!
